What is balayage?
Balayage—a French term meaning to sweep or paint—is a hair color method that creates a natural, sun-kissed effect. It’s applied by hand with a brush, without using foil like traditional coloring methods do. Instead of the uniform rows of highlights that are created by traditional foil highlighting, balayage creates a more natural effect, with color that is scattered throughout your hair without a strict pattern. The color is usually applied around the middle of your hair where the sun would naturally hit it most, then subtly painted toward the roots, so there isn’t a dramatic and noticeable line when your hair begins to grow out.
What are the benefits?
The great advantage of balayage color is it’s very low-maintenance. It grows out very naturally and doesn’t create obvious lines that need to be touched up like traditional highlights often do. You can go a few months without having to reapply color and it will still look beautiful. It’s one of the most economical ways to color your hair, since it doesn’t require that you spend money on trips to the salon or touch-up color every few weeks.
Who is it suitable for?
Balayage can be used on light or dark hair, for anyone looking for a way to lighten up their features while still maintaining a very natural, classy look. It works especially well for loosely-styled, flowing hair that is at least shoulder-length, but it can really work on any length other than short pixie cuts.
